15 Oct Big Sister Foundation Celebrates 90th Year
Big Sister Foundation is delighted to celebrate our 90th anniversary and continue the Big Sister’s mission of supporting women and families in need.
Our mission continues through the support of local community partners, all of whom provide valuable services in the Sutherland Shire and the St George areas.
They include 3Bridges’ Early Years Support Services, Dandelion Support Network, One Meal Sutherland Shire, Southern Community Welfare, The Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation and Project Youth’s social enterprise, Labour Y.
Now in its 90th year of operations, the Big Sister Movement originally provided hostel accommodation for women in need across Sydney, including two hostels located in Cronulla.
In 1976 the Big Sister Movement opened a hostel at Miranda, the Big Sister Hostel. Accommodating 75 people, it was run as a not-for-profit aged care facility caring for local residents. The sale of this hostel in 2004 led to the formation of the Big Sister Foundation.
Since 2005, Big Sister Foundation has donated $3.5 million to Shire community organisations, including a $1.2 million donation for the construction of Sylvanvale’s Milkarie Integrated Childcare Centre at Kirrawee in 2010.
In 1976 the Big Sister Movement opened The Big Sister Hostel at Miranda. Accommodating 87 people, it was run as a not-for-profit aged care facility caring for local residents until is sale in 2004.
Proceeds of the sale led to the formation of the Big Sister Foundation in 2010.
